Dinner at Texas de Brazil in Lexington's Summit at Fritz Farm
Review of Lexington KY Churrascaria
{Disclosure: Texas de Brazil provided a complimentary dinner for two in exchange for this review; no additional compensation was provided and all opinions are my own.}
Bob and I had the opportunity to visit Texas de Brazil in Lexington's The Summit at Fritz Farm over the weekend. We love Texas de Brazil for special occasion meals and were excited to sample the dessert menu! Texas de Brazil celebrates their 20th anniversary soon, and are offering all desserts for 20 cents on Monday nights in July with a meal purchase!
Now, as I'm sure you know, Texas de Brazil is a Churrascaria, colloquially known in the US as a Brazilian Steakhouse. Churrascaria a fun and delicious dining concept in which the gauchos carve charcoal-grilled meat tableside. It makes for a fast-paced sampler of meats! But, did you know that the salad bar at Texas de Brazil is pretty amazing as well?
I'd eaten at Texas de Brazil locations in Lexington and in Memphis before, but I'd never spent a lot of time with the salad area before. I started with a cheese plate for Bob and me to share. The tangy goat cheese, fresh mozzarella, and salty parmigiano were great accompaniments to the rich meats. The prosciutto was a fantastic quality, and the pineapple carpaccio was amazing! (If limitless meat isn't your jam, you can actually order the salad area only as your entree!)
We also tried some seafood. The shrimp salad was so great that I hope to recreate the recipe soon -- it had the heat of jalapeño and the tang of lime juice.
We also loved the Moqueca cod fish -- a traditional Brazilian fish stew made with coconut milk.
Of course, the star of any Texas de Brazil experience is the meat. As usual, the Churrascaria did not disappoint. When you're seated for churrasco service, each diner is given a two-sided card to indicate whether the gauchos should bring more meats to the table.
The filet was a standout, along with the flank steak. The lamb was perfect -- rich and well seasoned. We enjoyed a great assortment!
We made sure to save room for dessert, though. I had the Brazilian cheesecake, which had a rich fudge base and a caramel glaze.
Bob opted for a refreshing key lime pie. Both were fantastic.
Stop by the Texas de Brazil in Lexington for special promotions over the next few months for special 20th anniversary celebrations. It's a fantastic date night spot, or great for a family celebration!
Thanks so much to Texas de Brazil for inviting us to dinner! We'll be back soon!
The Best Hot Dog in Kentucky
Searching for the best hot dog in the Bluegrass State.
Here at HerKentucky, we're all about the crazy food holidays. In fact, with the extreme weather conditions this year, we haven't wanted to talk about much more than food all summer. Ice cream, cobbler, fried chicken, barbecue, hamburgers, and doughnuts: we've spent the summer counting down the best local treats. Today is National Hot Dog Day, and we thought we'd do the same, except...
We couldn't really make a list.
I have to say that, as much as I love roadside / diner/ fast food, I just don't like hot dogs. In fact, I can't say that I've eaten one since I was a kid, or at very least old enough to make the "what do you want to eat?" call for myself. So, I put the call out to the HerKentucky team. Weirdly, we couldn't get enough input to make a top 5 list.
Senate Hot Dog, Cincinnati.
Glenda notes that she loves Cincinnati's Senate, which reimagines street food in a gourmet setting. You can get a dog with anything from kimchi to crushed Grippos potato chips. But, as we all know, Cincy isn't technically in Kentucky; there's a little bit of water separating the two.
Jennifer tells us that there's a funky little hot dog stand and antique shop on Glasgow Road in Scottsville called Paradise Point that serves a good grilled hot dog along with some cute and unique shopping.
Over on Coal Miner's Bride, our friend Nikki says that the Prestonsburg Dairy Cheer has the best hot dog in the world. Growing up in Floyd County, I went to that Dairy Cheer many times, but I always got a hamburger and some sort of slushy that was like orange sherbet and sprite. I don't recall the name of that drink, but it sure was tasty.
And, I know that our friend Erin from Irreverin speaks highly of Weaver's hot dogs in London, but I seem to remember reading that they had a massive fire earlier this year, so I don't quite know if they're in business.
I've heard talk of Cincinnati-style coneys in Northern Kentucky; I know that a lot of people here in Louisville love Red's, which is located downtown.
Like I said, a Hot Dog Day Top 5 List just isn't in the cards today.
Now, I know that a lot of y'all don't agree with me on this whole hot dog thing. It's cool. I mean, my beau doesn't agree with me. It even appears that my Life Hero Chrissy Teigen doesn't agree with me.
And, I'm willing to bet that a whole lot of y'all don't agree with me. So, let's hear it, HerKentucky readers: Who makes the best hot dog in Kentucky?

The Cats Fans' Guide to Breakfast in Nashville
Good Morning, Big Blue Nation!
Whether you were out too late in the Gulch or SoBro celebrating the Wildcats' win or simply enjoying the other SEC games at Bridgestone Arena, chances are, you had an exciting night. Now, you sure could use some breakfast. Here are a few of my Music City favorites.
If you don't want to move your car, 417 Union is the way to go. We discovered this little gem during one of the Cats' Music City Bowl appearances. It's open at 7, you can probably walk there from your hotel, and you'll get a good, hearty meal without a huge crowd or a lot of pretension. Think: a really good version of your hometown diner.
If you want to drive all the way across town, the Loveless Cafe is calling your name. There's a reason that this motel-turned-diner is a quintessential Nashville Must-See. The food is, quite simply, that good. Try to rustle up a party of four for the all-you-can-eat breakfast, and don't miss the biscuits, country ham, or hash brown casserole!
If you want to stand in line with Vandy students, tourists, and everybody else under the sun, don't miss the Pancake Pantry. The food is fantastic, don't get me wrong. I particularly love the French toast and the sweet potato pancakes. But, weekend lines often reach Disney World proportions, and you may just miss the game while you're waiting on your carb fix.
If you want to have a great brunch experience, walk across the street from Pancake Pantry to Provence. There, you'll find amazing food, an unbelievable dessert selection, and the best cup of coffee in town. (Always, always order the Dancing Goats coffee. I could write a love sonnet to that blend.)
If you want to feel artsy, head over to East Nashville's Marche Artisan Foods. The food is incredible. The atmosphere is laid-back. And even the simplest fare -- a PB&J or a cup of hot chocolate -- is transformed into a work of art.
Finally, if you want to make me extra jealous, make plans for Sunday Chicken & Waffles at Hattie B's. The hot chicken is amazing, and I hear that, on Sundays, they serve it up with waffles and PBR. You really can't miss that.
Enjoy your breakfast and your visit to NashVegas! Go Cats!!
