Follow Your Dreams Friday

When we first started planning HerKentucky, we wanted to share the stories of as many Kentucky women as possible. Over the past two and a half years, we've told stories of professional success and personal triumph, stories of heartbreak, hard work, and happiness. In 2014, we're introducing a new feature called "Follow Your Dreams Friday", which will tell the stories of Kentucky women who are living life on their own terms. The women who've traded stressful and unfulfilling careers for happier lives. Mothers, artists, small business owners. Dreamers.

Every Friday, we'll share the story of someone we know who chose to follow her dreams. We hope these stories provide y'all with as much inspiration as they've given us.  We welcome submissions to this series. Please email me at heather@herkentucky.com for more information.

Happy New Year from HerKentucky!

2013 was a huge year for the HerKentucky team.

Our writers were everywhere.  Megan's dream of writing fiction became a fantastic reality. Shannon's fiction was featured in not one, but two literary magazines. Two of Sarah's essays -- about gender disappointment and rising tuition costs -- were featured on the Huffington Post. Emily's inspiring story of body image and weight struggles was featured in Ladies' Home Journal. Erin's essay was featured in the anthology This I Believe: Kentucky.

We had a lot going on personally as well. Glenda was a fierce warrior for her daughter's health. Erin and her family moved to a new church and a new part of the country. I moved to Louisville and realized that everything isn't quite where I left it. Liz said goodbye to her beloved NYC as Dr. Hotpants took the next steps in his surgical career. Sarah and her husband renewed their wedding vows on their 10th wedding anniversary.

As we reflect on all the changes of the past year, we're excited to share new stories with HerKentucky's readers in 2014. We look forward to telling you of our newest goals and dreams. We want to share the stories of Kentucky women who have followed their dreams both professionally and personally. We're excited to spend another year bringing you the best of Kentucky life.

Happy 2014 from HerKentucky!

What are your goals for the New Year?

Adding a little Sparkle!

I love the holiday season for so many reasons. The love, joy and time spent with friends and family, but what I really revel in, is the sparkle. The holiday season is the perfect opportunity for you to let your inner sparkle shine in home decor and fabulous frocks. No one will even bat an eye when you have decided to don sequins head to toe or put tinsel on every inch of your tree...you are just getting into the holiday spirit!

I know that the holidays can be a little taxing on our beautiful pocket books, so I have come up with ways to add sparkle without breaking your bank or your holiday spirit!

Work with what you have in your closet.

  • Every southern girl has a string of pearls and several strands of faux pearls for that matter! I would layer them and tie a red ribbon around them and Viola! You are ready for the holidays!
  • You could also revive an old choker, like 413 Sparrow Lane did. Adorable!
  •  Add shoe clips to jazz up your favorite black pumps. I love these shoe clips from The Dessy Group.
  • Dust off your red cardigan or favorite hat and adorn it with broaches for a little extra sparkle. Thanks for the idea Ann Taylor Loft

Accessorize
  • Accessories are the easiest way to update a little black dress. I love the statement necklace above from Zara. It is regal and was worn by a certain royal recently. It will take you from the holidays into spring!
  • Add a sequined cardigan to your favorite fancy frock. They are everywhere this season!
  • Add a pair of sparkly shoes. I love the pair below from Joe Jacey.

Don a Sparkly Skirt

  • Nothing says happy holidays like a little extra sparkle. This skirt can take you from the holidays to NYE with just the change of shirt. It is half off today too! Just use the code HOLIDAY when you check out at Ann Taylor Loft

I can't wait to start planning my holiday outfits! What will you all be wearing this year?

Mitochondrial Disease Hits Home

When we started HerKentucky, it seemed like a fabulous way to share snippets of Kentucky life. I didn't realize that the writers would come to feel like family. I've been so proud to hear of their new blogs and publishing contracts and professional opportunities, even if it sometimes meant a shift in our editorial schedule. The HerKentucky girls are my clan. Then, something happened that I never expected.

One of our writers -- and, by extension, the HerKentucky clan -- has received some heartbreaking news. Glenda McCoy's amazing daughter Katherine is currently undergoing testing for a possible Mitochondrial Disease.

Now I have to say that I didn't know much about this condition until quite recently. But, I'd never underestimate the power of a Kentucky woman, especially one of our writers. Glenda is on a mission to inform us all about this awful category of diseases, which affects somewhere between 1,000 and 4,000 children every year, severely compromising their everyday lives.

Mitochondrial diseases result from failures of the mitochondria, specialized compartments present in every cell of the body except red blood cells. Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, less and less energy is generated within the cell. Cell injury and even cell death follow. If this process is repeated throughout the body, whole systems begin to fail, and the life of the person in whom this is happening is severely compromised. The disease primarily affects children, but adult onset is becoming more and more common.
Diseases of the mitochondria appear to cause the most damage to cells of the brain, heart, liver, skeletal muscles, kidney and the endocrine and respiratory systems.
Depending on which cells are affected, symptoms may include loss of motor control, muscle weakness and pain, gastro-intestinal disorders and swallowing difficulties, poor growth, cardiac disease, liver disease, diabetes, respiratory complications, seizures, visual/hearing problems, lactic acidosis, developmental delays and susceptibility to infection.

Governor and First Lady Beshear recently undertook efforts to educate all Kentuckians about Mitochondrial Disease. The Governor declared last week Kentucky Mitochodrial Disease Awareness Week, and First Lady Beshear has used her official social media platforms to raise Mitochondrial Disease awareness. Here at HerKentucky, we hope to use our blog and social media as a source of ongoing information about Mitochondrial Disease treatments and resources.

Glenda asked me to let the HerKentucky readers know that she will be taking a step back from the blog as she and her husband await Katherine's diagnosis and plan her medical treatments. I know that all of our blog readers and social media followers will miss the amazing photographs and lovely posts that Glenda has added to HerKentucky this year. We already know that Glenda is an amazing mother to Katherine Belle, but I have been truly amazed by the grace and strength with which she has handled such a terrifying situation.

I ask that all of you -- HerKentucky's family of writers, readers, and fans -- please keep Glenda, Katherine, and David in your thoughts and prayers. Please, take a moment to educate yourself today about Mitochondrial Disease. If you so choose, donations may be made to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation.

I love birthdays. I love every single thing about them. I love the chance to celebrate something both ordinary and special - the passing of another year. I love parties. I love gathering for one common cause. I love getting dressed up. I love themes. I love singing to someone. I love cake. I LOVE presents.

I LOVE. IT. ALL.

So, here we are celebrating HerKentucky's second birthday by getting (virtually) dressed up and giving away presents and I can't help but get a little misty eyed and reminiscent as I do on all birthdays.

It seems like only yesterday I got an email from Heather entitled "An idea (or about 40% of one...)".
Hey ladies--
Last week, while I was writing (well, I was swimming and avoiding a deadline, but that's beside the point...), I was hit with an idea.
Y'all are among my very favorite bloggers/ writers. And y'all love our home state as much as I do. How would you feel about taking part in a blog project?

What I'm envisioning is a site for and about Kentucky women bloggers (natives, expats, or transplants...), on which we could blog as little or as often as we like. ... In the loosest sense, we'd be blogging about Kentucky and Southern life, but mainly just about our experiences. You could write about the topics you currently blog, or use the space for a totally different dialogue.

So, what do you think? Do you have suggestions for other participants? Ideas for a title?
There you have it. The birth of HerKentucky.

We all responded with a resounding "YES!" and the rest was history herstory.

I share all that to say. We all love HerKentucky and we have all been instrumental to its success in our own special way. But... on birthdays, you celebrate the mamma as much as the baby and the mamma of HerKentucky is Heather.

Thank you, Heather. Thank you for having this fantastic idea. Thank you for sharing it with us. Thank you for organizing and editing and promoting week after week and making HerKentucky the glorious testament to the Bluegrass State that it is.

Have some cake, girl. You've earned it!

Happy Birthday, HerKentucky!!

One day, back in August 2011, I was sitting by the pool, trying to make a tight deadline. Instead of focusing on the article I needed to finish, though, I started thinking about my girlfriends. Specifically, I thought of my Kentucky girlfriends. They're an accomplished group of women -- doctors and lawyers and teachers and business women. They balance careers and families and still find time to help others and look good. They hail from every corner of the Commonwealth. And they're not afraid to share their opinions.

Pretty soon, I was emailing a group of friends and acquaintances -- women whom I knew from school, work, and social settings. I asked them all a question that people either love or hate:

"What if we started a blog that tells our stories?"

As we began brainstorming ways to tell our experiences with the Bluegrass State, I had only one request: Everything can't be "lovely"; in fact, that kind of preciousness is what we should avoid. Instead, let's tell sincere stories that allow our love for Kentucky to shine through. I knew we were in for an interesting ride as we started discussing design. As we talked about possible headers, the suggestion of an equestrian motif came up. Sarah quickly noted that horses and equestrian life are really only a Bluegrass region thing; they don't symbolize every corner of the state. It was the first of many times that a HerKentucky writer reminded me that there isn't one unique Kentucky experience.

Over the past two years, the HerKentucky writers have used this site to provide interesting insights into their own Kentucky experiences. We've heard of small-town restaurants and festivals as well as life in Kentucky's biggest cities. We've talked sports, colleges, and current events. We've picked up new writers, while others have gone on to other opportunities. And we've created a site that makes me very, very proud.

I feel fortunate to count the HerKentucky writing team among my dearest friends. The hard work they've put into the site can be seen in every post, and the stories they share are simply priceless. I am so glad that I put off writing an article two years ago; it made the deadline tough, but it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Happy 2nd Birthday, HerKentucky! Thanks to all of our writers and friends who have encouraged the site. Most of all, thanks to all of our readers who've stuck around to hear our Kentucky stories!
